Nose Work
Does your dog love to use his nose? Then he will love this fun scenting and hunting activity inspired by the training given to working detection dogs. It’s easy to learn, needs no special equipment other than some cardboard boxes and helps build confidence and focus while providing mental and physical exercise for your dog. While the game starts with searching boxes, it quickly expands to include entire rooms, exterior areas and even the outside of vehicles. As you and your dog increase your searching experience, target odors are introduced and competition skills are taught.
Beginning Nose Work
This class introduces the foundation skills of the game such as handler observation and timing and establishes search intensity by the dog. This class will also cover the concepts of odor hygiene, classical conditioning and why self-reward is so important to this type of activity. This class will give the handler the skills to begin to interpret the dog’s search behavior as he explores the invisible world of odor around him.
Prerequisites: Dogs must be able to crate outside of the car quietly and handler must bring a portable crate to class each week. In nose work, only one dog works at a time allowing inclusion of dogs who may not be comfortable in close proximity to other dogs. However dogs should be able to work with people nearby without exhibiting aggression or resource guarding behavior. Since identifying and interpreting search behavior is essential to building the teamwork with your own dog, handlers should plan to spend class time observing the other dogs working and should also plan to be the sole handler during the entire session of 6 classes since each one builds on the previous class.
NOTE: This class meets for 60 minutes each week.
